I have really been lax in keeping this blog up. I hadn’t been doing so well, and I just didn’t feel like doing much with anything. But now I’m doing a lot better and thought I’d try again.
A couple of weeks ago, I got an email from some company/site that wanted to sell me the .com version of this site for about $70 for a year. I decided to check and sure enough it was available and so I bought it for two years for $25. Then I wrote them back to give them the good news. Guess I pissed them off cuz they didn’t write back.
Today I got a call from GoDaddy asking me if everything was OK with the new domain. I told her the story about why I bought it. She got a good laugh on that one. Then I mentioned that I was going to call and check on pointing the .com domain to this one. No problem and she did it. So now both point here. Kind of nice, and I’m going to start posting more along with pictures.
Many years ago, I enjoyed taking pictures. I spent the money for an SLR camera and all of it’s extra stuff. Well, film is hard to find nowadays, and I haven’t used it in quite a long time. I finally decided that I wanted to start taking photos again, and picked up a DSLR camera yesterday. I got a Canon EOS t3i along with a telephoto lens and bag. I found a deal on the entire package and got it. I am in the process of learning about everything it will do, and so far it’s a lot of fun. I haven’t done any real photography with it yet, but once the weather gets better I’ll go out to find something to take pictures of. Then I’m sure I’ll be filling up the galleries with new stuff. Until then, I’m off to play.
Many years ago, I joined Ebay and Paypal. It was a good way to get things shipped overseas, and I used it for a lot of computer stuff. But it soon got old, and I quit using them. The accounts lay dormant until recently when all of a sudden I got a charge for $200 on my paypal account. Talk about a shock. Having not used it in over 10 years, and then to suddenly have a charge was crazy. I immediately called Paypal, and told them I didn’t make the charge and hadn’t use it for a long time. They were good enough to reverse the charge, and I eventually got my money returned.
After this happened, I closed my Ebay account. I don’t use it, nor want it. I can get things just as quickly now that I’m in the states. Well, today I got the funds back from Paypal. I was pleased. The first thing I did after finding this out was to go and close the Paypal account. It is now closed, so I don’t have that worry anymore. I’m glad I did it. With all the fees that they are charging now, it just isn’t worth it. 10% here, 20% there starts to add up if you use them regularly. I was never a seller on Ebay, so there was no real reason to keep the account. The Paypal account is a bit different in that many merchants also accept it. But most of them also take credit cards, so what’s the purpose except for foreign purchases, and I’m not going to be making any of those that I know of.
Goodbye Ebay and Paypal. It’s been a long ride, but it’s over now.
I decided to take the plunge and upgrade my internet connection. I’ve been cruising along with a 20meg down/876k up for a while and thought I’d take a look to see what was available. My ISP offered 40m down/5meg up. Yes, there was a price increase, but it isn’t that much. I order it last week, and they turned it on overnight. Regular pages aren’t that much different, but oh, what a difference it makes with downloads. I’ve got the openSUSE 12.3 install dvd going as I write this, and the download speed has doubled from yesterday. It bounces between 4.8 and 5.2m throughput. Amazing. Most I had with the old setup was 2.2meg and that was on a good day. I think I’m going to really like this new speed.
Now I’m off the play some more.
In the past couple of weeks, I’ve started to have folks register on this blog. I find that interesting because this is the first activity I’ve had since putting the blog up almost a year ago. One thing I notice is that no one wants to leave their real name and most of the handles look like the spammers I’ve had over the years. That being said, I have no problems with the few that decided to register. Just don’t expect any privileges until I have more information.
This past week, we finally got an offer on my mom’s house down in Denver. It’s not as much as I would have liked, but it was reasonable, and a cash offer! Yep that’s right. When that happens, our realtor said unless we had some really good reason, we should take it. I agree as the other offer we had wasn’t even close, and actually cost us due to closing costs and such.
I’ll be glad when this is finished. It’s been over 6 months since mom passed away, and I’d like to get things finished so that we can move on. I miss her, but I know that she’s in a better place now. The past few years were hard on not only her, but also Donna, my sister. She took such good care of mom and I’ll always appreciate it. I didn’t live close enough to help but when we came back on vacations, we’d visit. It was hard because a lot of the time mom didn’t recognize us.
Things will change for us once this is done. Hopefully my sister and I can keep in touch. Now that I’m closer, we’ll be able to get together and have some fun.
Update: The buyers backed out for whatever reason, so we are back to square one. Damn.
Last summer was a bit frenzied with the furniture delivery, and getting things organized. This spring, we actually have a lot more time, and have started getting the yard in shape. Last year it was water and mow. That was about it. This year we’ve cleaned out the flower beds, and put down new mulch to get things looking better.
We also got a shepard’s staff to hang some more on in another corner of the yard.
Now that this is our house, we can do things like this. We thought back to all the places we’ve lived, and this is really one of the few times we’ve had a back yard to use and change to our liking. We’ve got more plans for later including a seating area in a shaded corner of the yard. That will really be the best part during the summer.
I’ve found out that there is a WordPress meetup group that meets here locally. I signed up, and there is supposed to be a get together this month. I’m looking forward to it. Now I have to make sure that I mark it on my calendar so that I don’t miss it. This should be fun.
I just noticed something. I thought it would be nice to import all my past posts. That was a good idea except for the links. There are links to my old site that won’t work. So I apologize for this. Eventually I’ll go through it and remove the links. Or perhaps create a gallery here to show them.
It’s about time that I get back into the swing of things. I’ve been away for far too long. It wasn’t about lack of interest, but getting things back to normal after last years fiasco. I’m feeling pretty good now, and raring to go. I need to do a lot of updating to this machine and am going to start that soon. I’m going to update the OS as what I’m running right now is getting a bit long in the tooth. After that I’ll update the blog software and go from there. Hopefully that will put the spring back into my step and I’ll start blogging again.
